Julianne DeGuardi, Paralegal
Julianne is very excited to be working at Aretz & Chisholm Immigration. Julianne is from Ballston Spa, New York. She graduated from St. Lawrence University in 2017 with a B.A. in Spanish and Global Studies. She pursued her Spanish language studies during undergrad while studying abroad in both Madrid, Spain and in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. These experiences abroad inspired her senior Global Studies honors thesis project entitled, “Migrant Dairy Farm Workers in the North Country: A Microcosm of NAFTA’s Human and Structural Repercussions.” The research for this project, involving weekly visits to a local dairy farm to interview migrant workers and facilitate English lessons, sparked her passion for immigration advocacy, and her interest in immigration law.
As a means of pursuing social justice work after graduating, Julianne moved to Denver to serve as an AmeriCorps Member with City Year Denver, an education non-profit that provides extra support in underserved schools. With City Year she served at Compass Academy in a 7th grade bilingual social studies classroom providing both academic and social emotional support. Outside of the classroom, she led various after school enrichment activities including student led service projects and field trips that helped integrate in the students into their local community.
Through serving with City Year, Julianne became further exposed to the structural injustices embedded within our education system and society overall that impact marginalized, especially immigrant, communities. Through both her undergrad research and service with City Year, Juliane felt eager to learn more about immigration advocacy through a legal lens while also continuing to utilize her Spanish language skills. She is very grateful for this opportunity to be working as a paralegal here at Artez & Chisholm Immigration.
In her free time, Julianne enjoys running, hiking, cycling, skiing, singing, and cooking.
